We are pleased to announce that MSc Eng. Kinga Siewierska from the research group of Prof. Paweł Chmielarz (Chmielarz Research Group) has been selected as one of the 109 laureates of this year’s Bekker Programme, implemented by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA). The fellowship will enable her to carry out a research stay abroad in the research group of Prof. Elisabetta Ranucci at the University of Milan (Università degli Studi di Milano).
The Bekker NAWA Programme is an initiative of the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange aimed at supporting the international mobility of researchers. It enables research and teaching fellowships at foreign academic institutions for individuals employed at Polish research units. The goal of the programme is to enhance researchers’ competencies and to strengthen the internationalization of Polish science.
The project of MSc Eng. Kinga Siewierska, entitled “Synthesis of the biocompatible crosslinkers for curing of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based materials for ophthalmic applications.,” focuses on combining expertise in macromolecule modification via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with the synthesis of bio-based polyamidoamino acids (PAA) to obtain biocompatible and antimicrobial materials for ophthalmology. During the research stay in the group of Prof. Elisabetta Ranucci at the University of Milan, crosslinking agents based on natural L-amino acids with antimicrobial properties will be synthesized and characterized, and subsequently used to cure linear copolymers containing PDMS. In this way, the project aims to integrate inorganic, organic, and naturally derived polymers to develop a new class of smart biomaterials.
